Pech Luna, ‘Moon Hill’, is one of the highest villages in the region with breathtaking views over ever changing fields and the Pyrenees Mountains. With its 50 habitations and farms, it offers peace and quiet whilst still being close to three major towns (Castelnaudary, Mirepoix, Pamiers) and 2 international airports (Carcassonne 40mn, Toulouse 45mn). The location makes it easy to reach all the tourist, cultural and sporting facilities including: Cathar castles, medieval towns (like the unique Carcassonne Cite and Ramparts), prehistoric caves, fresh water lakes with water-sports, rivers, ski-slopes, Mediterranean coast, mountain trekking and walking trails, horse-riding clubs and schools whist still enjoying Nature.
Pech Luna is locally famous for its country farm produce: one farm offers award-winning ‘foie-gras’ and duck produce and open in the evening as a restaurant, another is famous for its fresh goats’ cheeses, another yet for its award-winning ewe’s milk ice-creams. A few other farms in the village also offer fresh eggs, vegetables and fruits. One is never short of fresh produce in Pech Luna! Alas, it has not got its own café anymore, but villagers are working on it… Twice weekly mobile vendors such as baker, butcher and greengrocer keep the village well supplied. Other vendors are also available on request (frozen food, clothing…) One of our most senior citizens calls Pech Luna the ‘Centre of the Universe’, which is only slightly exaggerated! Once you see Pech Luna, you will be charmed!
Belpech, only 10 km away, offers all amenities: 2 small supermarkets, 2 bakers, a butcher, 3 doctors, a dentist, physiotherapists, a pharmacy, a news agent, a building supplies merchant, plumbers and electricians, builders, insurance agents, the Gendarmerie, a garage with petrol station, a crèche and a primary school, which our daughter attends. There is also a tennis court, a football stadium, a ‘Maison de la Jeunesse et de la Culture’ offering a variety of workshops and will soon be opening a mediatheque. Belpech has one café/restaurant overlooking the Vixiege River which serves lunch and dinner. There is a market every Wednesday.
Castelnaudary on the Canal du Midi (20 km) famous for the Cassoulet dish offers a huge Monday market, a variety of bars/restaurants, supermarkets, shops, all medical facilities and hospital, shops, banks, boat trips, and much more! Castelnaudary is in the Aude and Pech Luna’s nearest administrative town.
Mirepoix (Ariege), famous medieval town, (15 km) offers its huge Monday market and ‘brocante’ and a variety of bar/restaurants as well as all amenities (supermarket, doctors, pharmacies, veterinarians, newsagents, supermarkets, garden centre, shops…)
Pamiers (Ariege) is a much bigger town (20km) which offers anything you may need… or not need!
A lot of villages around Pech Luna have farms and attractions as well: bison farm, bamboo farm, cheese farms…
